Welcome!

Welcome to the official Kitchen 36 website. This site is dedicated to all the volunteers who worked at the kitchen during its period of operation after Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi gulf coast in 2005. The website is open for use to all volunteers who worked at Kitchen 36.

Our History:

Hurricane Katrina which hit the Mississippi and Louisiana gulf coast on the morning of August 29th, 2005 was the largest natural disaster in American history. The hurricane created an area of destruction that is 90,000 square miles, an area larger than the size of Great Britain.

In response to this devastation the American Red Cross established Kitchen 36 in Moss Point, MS to serve the residents of Jackson County who were affected by Katrina. Preparations for the establishment of Kitchen 36 actually started three days ahead of Katrina's landfall, where a team consisting of eight ERV's (Emergency Response Vehicles) were sent to Moss Point. Six of the ERV's were damaged during the storm.

After the storm passed, the Red Cross first established what was designated Kitchen 6, and was set up to operate out of the First Baptist Church in Pascagoula, MS. The Red Cross also operated two smaller kitchens, one in Gautier (Kitchen K-34) and another in Moss Point (Kitchen K-35). After a few weeks Kitchen's 34 and 35 were closed and merged into Kitchen 6. Later, the contract with the First Baptist Church came to and end. As a result Kitchen 6 was re-designated Kitchen 36, and was moved to its final home, a Pentecostal Holiness church, called New Horizon Ministries on Highway 63 in Escatawpa, MS. At New Horizon, Kitchen 36 Red Cross volunteers along with members of the Georgia Southern Baptist Convention assisted each other with the feeding of residents in Ocean Springs, Gautier, Pascagoula, Moss Point, Escatawpa, Helena, and other towns in Jackson County, Mississippi.

At its peak, Kitchen 36 Red Cross volunteers staffed 24 ERV's serving over 8,000 meals per day to needy residents of Jackson County.

Kitchen 36 operated out of its New Horizon location until November 9th, 2005 when it it was re-designated as Kitchen 37 with operations headquartered out of Biloxi, MS.
